I must congratulate the amazing Sabrina Gschwandtner on her latest exhibition at Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Santa Monica. Positively stunning work, and it has been duly recognized in ArtForum's LA Critics' Picks.
Her work takes film strips and "quilts" them together atop light boxes. Gschwandtner has been cutting and sewing 16 mm educational films that were de-accessioned from the Fashion Institute of Technology. She shapes them into patterns echoing popular American quilt motifs, introducing questions about hands and craft, as well as combining formal histories of abstraction with "women's work."
Two pieces were called out particularly in ArtForum's beautiful review of the show. One of which is Hands at Work Crazy Quilt (for Roderick Kiracofe). I must say that I am pretty excited to see I've made it into ArtForum, thanks to Sabrina!
Congratulations, Sabrina!
Sabrina Gschwandtner - Hands at Work runs 3 June to 29 July, 2017 at Shoshona Wayne Gallery, 2525 Michigan Avenue #B1, Santa Monica, California. // Press Release here // See more of Sabrina Gschwandtner's work at her website.
